Dr. Terra Hancock has been selected as the next superintendent of Union County Public Schools. The Union County Board of Education made the appointment in a special-called meeting Wednesday evening, approving a four-year contract to begin on July 1, 2024.
Dr. Hancock is certainly no stranger to Union County Schools. She has served in the district for 19 years as a classroom teacher, school counselor, principal, and central office administrator. She currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Instruction and Director of Pupil Personnel.
In addition to her work with Union County Schools, Dr. Hancock takes active roles in several professional organizations. She is a member of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators and serves as a mentor for the Kentucky Women in Educational Leadership program. She earned her Doctor of Education degree from Oakland City University.
“Dr. Hancock has a solid track record of success and demonstrates a firm commitment to our students, staff, and community,” highlighted Board Chairperson Jennifer Buckman. “We believe she is the right person to lead our district forward and will always do what it takes to keep the school system strong and successful for our kids. ”
Upon the announcement of her appointment, Dr. Hancock acknowledged, “I am deeply honored and immensely grateful to have been selected as the next superintendent of Union County Public Schools. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the board members for their confidence and trust.”
Dr. Hancock will succeed Patricia Sheffer who is retiring June 30 after serving as Union County’s superintendent for the last 13 years. Mrs. Sheffer and Dr. Hancock will have the opportunity to collaborate during May and June to ensure a smooth and successful transition of leadership.
Mrs. Sheffer noted, “As Dr. Hancock embarks on this new chapter, I am confident that she will continue to lead with a high level of excellence, compassion, and dedication that she has consistently demonstrated. Her impact on our Union County students, staff, families, and community will undoubtedly be profound, and I am excited to see the transformative change she will bring to Union County Public Schools.
Dr. Hancock emphasized, “I am committed to leading UCPS with enthusiasm, determination, logic, honesty, and integrity. Thank you once again for this incredible opportunity. I am honored and ready to serve.”
