The Union County Board of Education is making progress in its search for a new superintendent. On March 7, in a joint meeting with the Superintendent Screening Committee, the Board heard from Quin Sutton, a consultant with the Kentucky School Boards Association, who gave an update on applications submitted for Union County’s superintendent vacancy. He reported that there were 12 applicants for the position. Of the twelve, ten are men and two are women. The pool of applicants includes one current superintendent, five candidates who currently work in a school district central office, one who is a current principal, two who are teachers, and three who hold other positions. Ten of the applicants live in Kentucky, while two reside out-of-state.
All applicants will be reviewed and screened by the Superintendent Screening Committee which includes one Board member, one principal, two teachers, one classified employee, one parent, and one minority parent. The Board charged the Superintendent Screening Committee to maintain confidentiality of applicants and turn over all applications to the Board by March 28, 2024 with recommendations noted for the top 3-5 candidates. The Board also charged the committee to screen candidates for specific criteria regarding proven leadership, administrative experience, community involvement, positive student and staff relations, instructional focus, honesty and integrity, and knowledge of the Kentucky Education System.
After the Board meeting, the Superintendent Screening Committee reviewed applications in closed session. The committee will meet again on March 19th, 26th, and 28th. Once the screening committee presents its recommended candidates to the Board, the Board will assume the responsibility of interviewing candidates and hiring the new superintendent. The Board has set a target of naming the new superintendent by May 1, 2024. The new superintendent will begin his or her role on or around July 1, 2024.
