The Union County Board of Education met in regular session this Monday, September 25. ‘
The meeting started with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Will Wells, a fifth grade student at Sturgis Elementary School.
For the recognition portion of the meeting, Director of Finance Amy Morris acknowledged Deaconess Union County Hospital with a Community Supporter Award for its sponsorship of UCPS athletic programs. The hospital recently made a generous $7500 donation to cover expenses for providing an athletic trainer at school sporting events. Amber Powell, the hospital’s Chief Administrative Officer, and Audrey O’Nan, Director of Human Resources, accepted the award on the hospital’s behalf.
For student recognitions, UCHS principal Amy Nelson congratulated seniors Drew Sprague and Rachel Greenwell for recently being honored by the College Board National Recognition Program. The students received the College Board Rural and Small Town Award for their high Grade Point Average and outstanding performance on Advanced Placement exams.
For the Superintendent’s Report, Mrs. Sheffer shared that students in Grades 9, 10, and 12 have the opportunity to take the ACT test at UCHS on Oct. 17-18. She also noted that work started this week at UCHS for the Kentucky Department of Education’s Next-Generation Internet Project. Finally, she informed the Board that she will continue working on a proposal for the Board’s consideration regarding the addition of a Student Board Representative.
Next, Sturgis Elementary principal Blaine Hunter introduced a group of students from the SES Gifted and Talented program. The students shared a presentation with the Board about what it means to be a Sturgis Elementary Chief. The student leaders shared about the importance of various traits such as leadership, respect, academic enrichment, and social responsibility.
In other business of note, the Board approved the working budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year as well as final allocations for staffing and instructional funds for this school year.
The Board’s next meetings include a working session on October 19 at noon and a regular meeting on October 23 at 6:00 pm.
